My abstract paintings are informed by the textural qualities of worn and ageing surfaces. Both the man-made and natural environments provide rich sources of material for my work.

I am fascinated by the layers of paint on derelict buildings and the aesthetic qualities of aged, found objects. At one time these things were all functioning part of everyday life. They have history and stories attached to them. I use these as both artistic and archaeological reference points.

My paintings are an expressive interpretation of these studies. I merge the subject’s inherent aesthetic with historical art references and contemporary painting practices.

My portraits work in much the same way. The human face is the focus of our attention and hides as many emotions as it gives away. I create each piece gradually, building the paint in thin layers. I am constantly striving to capture the sitter’s personality, experience or mood.
